What is AaSS?
AaSS (Agent as Software Solution) is a way of doing business where an AI agent builds and runs software you own, instead of software you rent.
AaSS is not Agent as a Service (AaaS), where you rent someone else’s agent, and it is not “anything as a service” (XaaS): in AaSS you own the software, and only swappable parts, like the AI model or the server, are rented.
An AI agent is an AI that can act, not just chat: it can read and write files, write code, run it, and check the result.
Coined by Alex Gilevich (Alex G.) in September 2026.
The name, read slowly.
You describe a problem in plain words. The agent designs the database, builds the screens, connects the pieces, and stays to change them when your business changes. You own the data, the code and the process, so you can change tools, vendors or AI companies without starting over. AaSS is not a war on SaaS: renting still makes sense for many things, and both ways are meant to exist. And the agent does not replace people. It works for the person you already have.
The two tests
A method needs a line people can check without asking us. These two are that line.
Try them on one tool you pay for.
Two yeses: AaSS. Any no: some kind of rent. Rent is fine, as long as you know it’s rent.
The way of life.
Seven beliefs
Two ways, both fine.
There are two ways to get software. You can rent it (SaaS), or you can own it (AaSS). Up and down, left and right: both are meant to exist. If what you rent works for you, keep it. AaSS is for the parts where it doesn’t.
Everything is a database.
A business is data: orders, stock, customers, invoices. Almost every tool you pay for is a database, some screens to work with it, and calls that move data from one database to another. A website is the same thing: data travelling between databases, shown through screens. Once you see that, you can see what you could own.
The honest half: the database is the easy part to see. The rules around it, and keeping it right for years, are the real work.
Own the data, the code and the process.
Whoever owns those three owns your business’s future. Data alone is not enough: an export without the rules and steps that give it meaning is a pile of rows. When a vendor owns all three, you’re stuck, and that’s okay if you’re okay with it. If you’re not, AaSS puts all three in your name. Rent the parts anyone can swap, like the server or the AI model. Own the parts that make your business yours.
The agent is your IT department.
For the first time, a small business can have an IT department, a development department and a marketing department: an agent that works for the people it already has. The money that went to the software around the business can go into the business.
The agent still needs a person in charge: someone who knows the business, says clearly what’s wrong, and checks the result.
AI makes people better, not fewer.
The agent does the typing, the searching and the checking. People do the judging and the deciding. AaSS isn’t about replacing the person who knows the business. It’s about giving that person the reach of a team.
Building got cheap. Keeping didn’t.
An agent can build working software fast. Keeping it working for years is the real cost: updates, breakage, security, and a business that keeps changing under it. Agents make that lighter. They don’t make it free.
We say this first, because it’s true.
Learn it, and take the rod home.
Knowing how isn’t enough. Without the tools, you know how to fish and still go hungry. So the method comes with the rod, and the rod is real: ready code, templates and prompts, meaning the actual software, with its agent attached.
What AaSS is not
Every “as a Service” is a way to rent. AaSS is a way to own, with an agent as your engineer. Each row below is the right choice for someone.
| Way | What you get | Who owns the data, code and process | What you pay for | When you want to leave | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SaaSSoftware as a Service | a finished product, the same for everyone | the vendor | access, every month | you export what they let you export | problems everybody shares |
| AaaSAgent as a Service | access to someone else’s agent | the vendor | access, per seat or per use | the agent, and what it learned, stay with them | trying agents with no setup |
| Service as softwarea 2024 venture-investor phrase | a result done by the vendor’s AI, like bookkeeping | the vendor | the outcome | you start over with someone else | handing off a whole job |
| XaaSanything as a service | the umbrella name for all of the renting above | the vendor | access | depends on the vendor | a label, not a choice |
| No-code platforms | a builder you use yourself | your setup is yours; where it runs and what it can do are theirs | access, every month | you rebuild somewhere else | quick tools, when the platform’s limits fit |
| AaSSAgent as Software Solution | software for your problem, built and run by an agent that works for you | you | the swappable parts: an AI model subscription, a small server, your time (and a person’s help, if you want it) | you take everything; there’s nothing to ask for | the processes that make your business different |
Cousins, not rivals. Self-hosting and “local-first software” share the ownership idea, and people have argued for it for years. AaSS doesn’t claim to have invented ownership. What’s new is the agent: it makes ownership possible for people who don’t write code.
Questions people ask
All the honest questionsWhat is AaSS?
AaSS (Agent as Software Solution) is a way of doing business where an AI agent builds and runs software you own, instead of software you rent. You describe a problem in plain words, and the agent designs the database, builds the screens and stays to change them. You own the data, the code and the process.
What does AaSS stand for?
AaSS stands for Agent as Software Solution. The casing follows the same rule as SaaS: capitals for the big words (Agent, Software, Solution) and a small letter for the small joining word (as). Read it as a sentence: the agent, as your software solution.
Is AaSS the same as Agent as a Service?
AaSS is not Agent as a Service (AaaS). Agent as a Service rents you access to someone else’s agent. In AaSS, the agent works for you, and the software it builds is yours. Every “as a Service” is a way to rent. AaSS is a way to own.
Is AaSS the same as XaaS?
AaSS is not XaaS (“anything as a service”), the umbrella name for renting everything from software to servers. In AaSS you own the software, and only swappable parts, like the AI model or the server, are rented. XaaS is a label for renting; AaSS is a way to own.
What does “From SaaS to AaSS” mean?
“From SaaS to AaSS” names a choice: from software you rent (SaaS, Software as a Service) to software you own, built and run by an AI agent (AaSS, Agent as Software Solution). It is not a war on SaaS. Renting still makes sense for many things, and both ways are meant to exist.
Who coined AaSS?
AaSS was coined by Alex Gilevich (Alex G.) in September 2026. He is a full-stack engineer in Vancouver, BC, with more than 25 years of building software. The idea grew out of his own software, built on one conviction: no lock-in to a vendor.
How do you say AaSS?
AaSS is said as one word, like SaaS. Yes, we know how it sounds. That’s the point: you sit on your own agent. SaaS has rhymed with “sass” for years, and the software world made that joke first. Formal paperwork just says “agent solutions.”
